As internet became part of our daily lives, it started containing more and more personal information which can be accessed or hacked quite easily. You can be safe on the internet just by following simple rules.
Following these rules will protect you from:
- Cyber Bullying
- Any Unwanted Sexting
- Viruses
- Stalking
- Inappropriate Content
- And most importantly, Identity Theft
But how to be safe on the internet? What are the rules I should follow? The answers are pretty simple.
Choose strong passwords.
You should create your passwords unique, strong, and not easily guessed by strangers or anyone close to you. Do not use birth dates, or simple things like 1234. The longer the password the safer it is. Try to choose different passwords for different websites.
Do not post personal information. Don't give your full name, address, or phone number to anyone online that you don't trust or know. Do not click on adds like “has your credit card been stolen” or “Want a green card? Not many people check “Have read and agree the terms and conditions” after reading, but be mindful while you can. Look for scams before installing any unknown programs Limit the information you share on social media. Do not post your address, parent’s and siblings names your telephone numbers. Letting the internet know where you live and when you will not be at home may lead to someone breaking into your houses which may end up with murder. Many secure sites require security questions. These questions include: "What is your mother's maiden name?", "What is your paternal grandmother/father's name?" Sharing this kind of information can result in identity theft. Also,
- Use an anti-virus program an anti-spyware program and a firewall.
- Secure your wireless router.
- Download files from trusted sources.
